The layout of your kitchen is far more important than you realise. If you can’t get to everything easily, you’re going to struggle to cook properly. It can also be dangerous if you’ve got kids running around, and you need to layout the kitchen in such a way that they are separate from any of the potential hazards. It’s also important that you look beyond cooking and eating, and think about all of the other things that you might want to use your kitchen for. With that in mind, these are some of the biggest kitchen layout mistakes that you should avoid at all costs.
The Kitchen Triangle
At the core of any kitchen layout is the kitchen triangle. The sink, stove, and refrigerator make up the triangle, and their placement in relation to one another is the most important thing that you need to get right. The sink will get the most use so it needs to be easy to access, however you also need it close to the stove so you aren’t carrying pans back and forth across the kitchen to wash them or drain things. The refrigerator needs to be positioned close to the stove so you can reach all of the ingredients whenever you need them. Otherwise, you might burn things if you’re leaving the pan unattended to go over to the other side of the room.Equally, you need to make sure that the area isn’t too small because people will be tripping over each other. When you’re putting together the layout of your new kitchen, focus on these three appliances first, and build everything else around it.
Not Enough Storage
Another huge mistake is underestimating the amount of storage that you’ll need. If you do that, you’ll end up with cupboards that are packed to the brim and you’ll have to spend ages rummaging through whenever you need to find something. The reason that a lot of people don’t have enough space is that they use standard units. This limits the amount of space they can fill with cabinets. It’s much better to use custom kitchen cabinets. That way, you can fill any smaller gaps with cabinets, where standard sizes usually wouldn’t fit. By utilizing every last bit of space, you’ll guarantee that you’ve got enough space.
Not Enough Counter Space
When people are thinking about the amount of counter space that they need, they just think about space for chopping, and a bit of extra for ingredients. But the reality is, you’re going to be putting toasters, coffee machines, and all sorts of other bits on there. That space soon fills up and you’ll find yourself shuffling things around trying to make space to cook. There’s nothing more annoying, and it’ll make the place look messy in no time. It’s far better to overestimate on counter space because having a little extra is always a good thing. You don’t know what other appliances you might buy in the future so the chances are, it’ll get used at some point.
It’s easy to make these mistakes, but if you do, your kitchen will be a nightmare to use.
