Valentine’s Day is just a short few days away, and we know what means: people everywhere are scrambling to find a gift or date night idea that says A. I love you, and B. I absolutely didn’t leave this until the last minute. But don’t worry at all, because we’re on hand to make sure you’re able to come up with an idea that says both of these things, in a style that is uniquely your own. So strap yourself in, because we’re on a mission to make this Valentine’s Day the most romantic one you’ve had yet.

Make It About Them
There’s a lot of tradition surrounding what a person should do for their partner on Valentine’s Day, but there can’t be one catch all approach – simply because every person is different. Only you know what your partner’s interests and hobbies are, so put your specialist knowledge into practice and create a day that focuses not on the idea of love, but on them! For example, if they love a particular book with a passion that matches your love for them, incorporate it into the day somehow. You could make a meal based on it, go and see an exhibition, or print out their favourite verses and hang them around the house. If they do the same for you (maybe forward them this in an email…) you’ll both be bringing each other’s passions to the day!
Whisked Away
Everybody loves getting taken away somewhere new for a night. Why settle for another night in the house when you could be going on an adventure and spend the night somewhere that ignites the passions and your love for one another? It’s easier than ever to book last minute breaks, so have a think about what they might enjoy and book something, why not? It doesn’t even have to be that far from where you live. There are plenty of benefits of having a “staycation”, including saving money and have little to no travel time. Find somewhere nice to spend the night and have a break, together, away from it all.

Special Surprise
Whether you’re at home or travelling, make the day extra special by throwing in surprises during the day. Greeting card apps allow you to send a card anywhere, which is handy when you’re travelling, while you can also look up florists who deliver in the region you’ll be travelling. If you’re at home, then doing things like cooking their favorite meal for a surprise dinner, baking sweet treats for dessert, or busting out their favorite film for a night of movie watching will go a long way to making them feel special.
Back to the Beginning
How did the two of you meet? Did they trip over your suitcase on the subway? Did you both order the same overly complicated drink at Starbucks? Whatever it was, it’s entirely yours. This Valentine’s Day, why not take a trip down memory lane, back to the places that played a pivotal role in the development of your relationship? On the face of it, spending an hour on the subway or the evening in a Starbucks cafe might not look like the most romantic occasion in the world, but then who cares what it looks like? It’s your history. You can even make a whole day of it, revisiting the places you’ve been to during your time together, watching your favorite films, and go on the same goofy dates you’ve always been on. Life gets in the way of us doing these things on a regular basis, so make Valentine’s Day count for something!

Just the Two Of You
Not everybody is into going to restaurants or showering their partner with grandiose declarations of love. Some couples are content doing their own thing. To those couples, going for a quiet walk in the woods and having a long conversation is just as much fun as getting a couples spa treatment at a fancy resort. Make Valentine’s Day a day for celebrating your love, not the universal concept of love. As long as what you’re doing is definitely about the two of you, it’ll be a day to remember.
Throughout the Day
Like with everything else, it’s easy to let our partner’s flitter through our days with just a passing gesture of affection. They don’t mind, you don’t mind – it’s just the way it goes on some days. But not on Valentine’s Day. Make this the day where you make sure it’s your partner who is the object of your attentions. You can do nice things for them all throughout the day, like doing any of the chores that they’re usually responsible for, offering to drive them to wherever they need to be, running a bath, or any other small gesture they might find nice. You might not be able to put the time in to plan something big (it is on a tuesday this year, after all), or you might not be able to afford going away: but gestures of love cost nothing, so you’ll always be able to do that!
…And for the Rest of the Year
Valentine’s Day can be an awesome mini-holiday, but it’s not a pass to sit around on your hands for the rest of the year. While you’ll obviously not be able to keep up the level of love showing that you do on February 14, you can incorporate the general attitudes into your everyday life. If you surprised your partner by doing the dishes when they were expecting to, why not do them more often, not because of the day, but because you want to make them happy? Ultimately, Valentine’s Day is there to remind us of the love we have for our partner – it’s not a day where we show all our affection in one burst. Everyday can be as loving as Valentine’s Day with the right attitude, so make it part of your New Year’s resolutions (it’s not too late…) to be more affectionate for your partner – they’ll love you all the more for it.
