Some things can easily be prepared for because you know about them in advance. If you want to take a vacation, you plan and save your money for it. If you want to buy a new car, you research your options and you can apply for a loan. But, how do you prepare for a natural disaster? While you may not be able to be completely prepared for it, you can be better equipped to handle it if or when it happens.
First you need to know exactly what kind of natural disaster that you are potentially facing. Find out the history of your area. Does it frequently flood, forest fires or have a lot of tornado’s? Knowing this will help you know what exactly you should be preparing for.
You want to have a plan in place and go over it with everyone in your family. Decide on a place to go to get out of danger, get walkie talkies so you can communicate with each other in case you get separated.
Collect a disaster kit, including a first aid kit, any medications that your family may need and important documents. Store these in a waterproof case or bag where they are easily accessible.
You need to have a good supply of food and clean drinking water. You should have enough stocked up to last 6 months to a year. If you have a designated place to go in an emergency keep it stocked with nonperishable food and a good supply of water. There are survival food kits that will last in storage for many years. You may want to have 1 to 2 gallons of water for each person in your family stock piled.
You will want a flashlight, candles or some waterproof matches in your disaster kit. Along with a radio that works on batteries. You may not have electricity.
Pack a some extra clothes and any necessities that you may need in a bag and ready to grab and go.
Blankets are another thing you may want to have packed or stored in a safe place. You never know when a blanket could come in handy during a disaster. Or if you have room for it, a sleeping bag would be a great thing to have in an emergency.
Have an emergency stash of cash handy. If there is a power outage you will not be able to use a ATM.
This sounds like a lot of things to gather up and store but you will be glad you took the time to plan out everything if you find yourself in the middle of a natural disaster.
